Here are the ten main ideas I discussed in my interview on the "Theology Jam" podcast. Have a listen above or below or at this link.
1. Introduction: I was introduced as a pastor, writer, public speaker, and photographer. I shared that I am transitioning from pastoring at a church to becoming the executive director of a ministry I founded, The Shepherd's Refuge.
2. Call to Ministry: I recounted my unexpected journey into ministry. It was not my ambition to be a pastor, but I felt a call from God to become one.
3. Family Support: I discussed the incredible support I received from my family, especially my wife, during the transition into ministry, despite the challenges and sacrifices we faced.
4. Personal Preparation: I explained how my personal pursuits, such as reading, journaling, and engaging in church activities, unknowingly prepared me for ministry, even though my previous career seemed unrelated.
5. Challenges in Ministry: I shared the difficulties I encountered early in my pastoral career, including church conflicts and personal struggles with depression.
6. Sustaining Practices: I emphasized the importance of spiritual disciplines, such as prayer, reading the Bible, and journaling, which sustained me through tough times.
7. Need for Mentorship: I highlighted the crucial role of mentorship and counselling in my life and ministry. I mentioned specific mentors and counsellors who helped me navigate difficult periods.
8. Pastoral Burnout: I touched on the widespread issue of pastoral burnout, noting that many pastors leave the ministry due to high stress and unmet needs for support.
9. The Shepherd's Refuge: I introduced my new ministry, The Shepherd's Refuge, which aims to provide care and support to pastors and ministry leaders, helping them avoid burnout and find pathways through their struggles.
10. Vision for the Church: I concluded with my vision for a healthier church environment, where pastors can be more open about their struggles, reducing the unrealistic expectations placed on them and fostering a more supportive community.
